In this article we'll walk you through the process of integrating your SmarterSends instance with your Acoustic Org. There are a few steps we'll take you through but this can be accomplished in 15 minutes or less.
The items you'll need to create within your Acoustic Org include:
- A user account setup for the API integration
- Add and Application to Acoustic
- Generate a Refresh Token for the API user
In order to start the integration process, go ahead and log into both your Acoustic Org with an Org Administrator account and your SmarterSends instance. We'll start in your Acoustic Org.
- The first step is to create a new user account within your Acoustic Org that all SmarterSends API access will occur through. Open https://app.goacoustic.com/my-acoustic/ in your browser and click the Org you want to add the user to and click Manage.
- Click the Users link on the left sidebar and click Add User.
- Provide a valid email address for this user (ideally an email address you have access to if you need to modify this account in the future).
- For first name, use SmarterSends and last name, API Account
- For Role, choose Org Admin.
- You should see the new user account in the Users table.
- Click the 3 dots to the right of this new account and click Edit Permissions.
- Click the checkbox labeled "Do not enforce password expiration policies for this user."
- Set the timezone for this API user account to GMT.
- Click Save.
- For additional security you can add the SmarterSends IP address to the User IP Restrictions section to ensure that API calls can only come from SmarterSends.
- Click Save.
- You will need to log into this account at least once to reset the password. When you first create an Acoustic user account it is supplied with a temporary password and must be replaced by a permanent password.
- Now that we have a user account, we can setup an integration application.
- In the Acoustic sidebar, click Settings, Administration, Organization Settings
- Click the Application Account Access heading.
- Click Add Application
- Add "SmarterSends API" for the name and click Add.
- Click the application you just added, SmarterSends API and you will see the Client Id and Client Secret. Copy and paste these values to the SmarterSends Email Service Provider setup screen.
- Now back in Acoustic under the Application Account Access heading, you will see a button labelled Add Account Access, click this.
- Select the SmarterSends API application you just created and the API User account you just created.
- The Refresh Token will be emailed to the email address used for the API User account.
- Copy and paste this refresh token into the SmarterSends Email Service Provider setup screen.
- Click Save
- When the above credentials are entered, you'll now be able to select the Database within your Acoustic Org you would like to integrate SmarterSends with. Select the database now.
- If you would like any Seed contacts to not be added to your main database, select a database to use for your Seed contacts.
- Define your Sync Fields. These are the fields that will be compared with your existing contacts when adding or updating contacts to ensure that duplicate records are not created. In many cases, email is the only field used for Sync Fields. But if your Acoustic database is setup with multiple fields that should be used to identify a specific contact, be sure to select those fields here.
- By default all fields in your Acoustic database will be available for personalization or importing data into (with the correct permissions) but if you would like to restrict which fields are available to your SmarterSends users, you can use the Restrict Import Fields checkbox. Once you enable this feature you can select the fields from your Acoustic database that shoule be available for use by your SmarterSends users.
- Finally, you'll need to create a folder in your Acoustic Org to store your Saved Templates. This is the directory path where mailing templates will be saved within Acoustic. You must create this directory manually within Acoustic e.g SmarterSends/Templates. Create the folder in Acoustic and add the exact name to this field.
- Click Save and you are Integrated!
