This guide explains how Iterable customers enable SMS in SmarterSends, configure Iterable-specific options, and build SMS templates with editable content areas.
Prerequisites
- SmarterSends account with admin access
- Iterable account with SMS enabled (channels/message types configured)
- message_type_id for your SMS type in Iterable
- channel key (Iterable Channel Name/ID) for SMS
- Optional: link tracking/shortening domain if used
Enable Iterable SMS in SmarterSends
- In SmarterSends, go to Settings > Integrations > SMS.
- Set Provider to Iterable.
- Fill in provider-specific settings:
- MMS (optional): Enable if you want to send images via MMS
- Stop Language: Compliance footer text, e.g., Reply STOP to optout.
- Include From Name (optional): When enabled, the sender’s From Name (configured in your templates) can be included within your message content (useful for brand identification at the start of the SMS).
- Maximum Message Length (optional): Between 160 and 800. SmarterSends uses this to warn and help you stay within intended lengths.
- SMS Channel (required): The Iterable channel you send SMS through.
- Message Type ID (required): Your Iterable Message Type ID for SMS.
- Link Tracking (optional): Enable Iterable link shortening.
- Link Shortening Domain (optional): Enter the domain you have configured within Iterable for link shortening/tracking.
- Save.
Create a SmarterSends SMS Template (Iterable)
- Go to Templates > Create Template and choose type SMS.
- Name the template and set a default From Name (optional) and whether it’s locked.
- Insert text and campaign merge tags as needed (e.g., %%campaign_name%%, %%campaign_template_name%%).
- Add Content Areas (see next section) for the parts you want end users to control per-campaign.
- Save the template.
Using Content Areas in SMS Templates
Use the same content area pattern:
- Placeholders: %%contentarea{ID}%%
- Optional conditional wrappers: {%conditional-{ID}-begin%} ... {%conditional-{ID}-end%}
Test Sends and Compliance
- Use the composer’s test send by entering the Email Address of the test account associated with your SMS number.
- Include stop_language in your template or as a content area to meet compliance needs.
