Configuring Send Limits
Overview
Send Limits allow account owners to control how many campaigns or recipients a group can send during a specified period.
Send Limits apply to email, SMS, push, and in-app campaigns. When a campaign would reach or exceed an applicable limit, SmarterSends prevents the user from sending or scheduling it and displays the limit that was reached.
Accessing Send Limits
Only an Admin can create, edit, or delete Send Limits.
- Sign in to SmarterSends as the account owner.
- Go to Settings.
- Select Restriction Settings.
- Locate the Send Limits section.
Creating a Send Limit
- Click Add Send Limit.
- Enter a descriptive name for the rule.
- Configure a message limit, a recipient limit, or both.

- Click Save.
Send Limit Settings
Name
Enter a name that clearly identifies the purpose of the limit, such as “Daily Campaign Limit” or “Monthly Recipient Limit.”
Messages
Enter the maximum number of campaigns that may be sent during the selected period.
A campaign counts toward the message limit when its status is Pending, Reviewed, Scheduled, or Sent. Draft campaigns do not count toward the limit.
Messages Per
Select the period used for the message limit:
- Day
- Week
- Month
- Year
Recipients
Enter the maximum total number of recipients that campaigns may target during the selected period.
Recipient usage is calculated using the recorded sizes of the audiences selected for applicable campaigns. This is an estimated count and may differ from the final number delivered by your marketing platform because of suppressions, deduplication, delivery failures, or changes to an audience.
Recipients Per
Select the period used for the recipient limit:
- Day
- Week
- Month
- Year
Group Assignment
Select one or more groups that must follow the limit.
Select All Groups to apply the same rule to every group. Campaigns are checked against the rules assigned to their currently selected group.
At least one group must be selected.
Using Message and Recipient Limits Together
A Send Limit may contain a message limit, a recipient limit, or both.
When both limits are configured, the campaign must satisfy both rules. For example, a group could be limited to:
10 campaigns per day
and
100,000 recipients per month
A campaign will be blocked if either limit is reached.
How Send Limits Are Evaluated
SmarterSends evaluates Send Limits using the campaign’s intended send time.
For Send Now campaigns, the current date and time are used.
For scheduled campaigns, the scheduled delivery date and time are used.
Daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly limits use the calendar period containing the intended send time rather than a rolling time window. Calculations use the scheduling user’s configured timezone.
If more than one Send Limit applies to a group, the campaign must satisfy every applicable rule.
What Users See When a Limit Is Reached
The campaign summary displays a Send Limit Exceeded message explaining which limit prevents the campaign from being sent.
The send or schedule button will not be available while the campaign exceeds a limit. The user can return to the campaign settings and:
- Schedule the campaign for another period
- Select a smaller audience
- Remove an audience
- Wait until the current limit period has ended
Editing a Send Limit
- Go to Settings > Restriction Settings.
- Locate the Send Limit.
- Open its Actions menu.
- Select Edit Send Limit.
- Update the settings.
- Click Save.
Changes apply the next time a campaign’s sending limits are evaluated.
Deleting a Send Limit
- Go to Settings > Restriction Settings.
- Locate the Send Limit.
- Open its Actions menu.
- Select Delete Send Limit.
- Confirm the deletion.
Deleting a Send Limit removes that restriction. It does not delete, cancel, or otherwise modify existing campaigns.
Important Notes
- A Send Limit must contain a message limit, a recipient limit, or both.
- An interval is required for every configured limit.
- Pending and Reviewed campaigns count toward limits because they are awaiting completion of the approval workflow.
- Previously scheduled campaigns count toward the period in which they are scheduled to send.
- Send Limits do not automatically cancel campaigns that have already been scheduled or sent.
