Configuring OpenAI

Integrate OpenAI to allow your users to use generative ai for subject line creation while following your brand guidelines.

 

Integration Steps

1. Create an OpenAI account at https://platform.openai.com/
2. Create a new Project for your SmarterSends integration. This allows you to assign limits and budgets for your OpenAI usage
3. Create an API key within your Project
4. Log into your SmarterSends instance and click the Integrations menu item. Note, if you don't see the Integrations link, contact support and we will enable it for you.
5. On the Integrations page, click the OpenAI integration.
6. Copy and Paste your API Key, Organization ID and Project ID from the OpenAI settings and click the Test API Access. 
7. If you entered the data correctly you'll see a green check mark next to API Access Successful.
8. Now you can craft your Brand Guidelines Prompt. 
9. This should contain instructions to the system as to how to answer a request to create an email subject line. For instance you could use a Brand Guideline prompt similar to the following:

   You are an amazing copywriter that always follows the 
   Brand Guidelines when writing email subject lines.
   The Brand Guidelines are:
   1) Address the recipient by their first name in the format %%First Name%%
   2) Always include the brand name: "SmarterSends" in the provided text.
   3) Always title case the text.

   These instructions will be included with every request to the OpenAI system so that you can ensure that the response provided fits your organization's guidelines.
10. In addition, any words or phrases you add to the Exclusions area will ensure that these words and phrases are never included in a response.
11. Click Save and you've now enabled the integration and enabled your users to generate subject lines.
12. When creating or editing a Mailing, users will now have a new icon next to the Subject line field:
    
13. Clicking the icon brings up a dialog:

Here your users can select how many subject line variations to generate (1-5), what tone to use (Professional, Funny, Sarcastic, Urgent, Emotional, Concise, and whether or not to include emojis in the response. Note that the subject lines created will be based on the content already added to your mailing. The mailing's content is sent along with the request so that OpenAI has the full context to generate your subject lines.
15. Once a user clicks Generate, sample subject lines will be created. If you like one of the responses, simply click the response to select it for your subject line:
